If you're new to managing a bag, know that you're not alone. It can seem daunting at first, but with time and support, you'll get the hang of it. Here are some helpful tips from our NSWOC that can ease your journey:

Beginner Tips and Tricks

Be Patient with Yourself: Learning a new skill takes time. Mistakes are part of the process, so don’t let them discourage you.

Choose the Right Supplies: Finding the right wafer, pouch, and accessories is crucial. Try different options until you find what works best for you.

Prioritize Skin Care: Keeping your stoma and surrounding skin healthy is key to avoiding issues. Clean gently and dry thoroughly.

Establish a Routine: Change your pouch at the same times each day when your output is typically lower.

Emptying Tips: Burp your pouch to release gas and use a bathroom stall for privacy until you feel more confident.

Prevent Leaks: Skin barriers, paste, and rings can provide extra security. Ask your nurse for demonstrations on how to use these products.

Emotional Well-Being

It’s OK to Feel Overwhelmed: Allow yourself to experience and express your feelings, whether frustration, sadness, or something else.

Seek Support: Ostomy nurses, support groups (both online and in-person), and empathetic friends can be invaluable.

Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate small victories, from a well-sealed pouch to your first outing with it.

Additional Resources

Ostomy Manufacturer Websites: These often offer great tutorials and free samples.

YouTube: There are many videos from the community that can guide you through different techniques.

Your Ostomy Nurse: Don’t hesitate to ask all your questions, no matter how basic they seem.

Final Thoughts

Living with an ostomy can be challenging, but it also allows you to regain your health and enjoy life. Remember, you are strong, you will adapt, and there’s a supportive community cheering you on!
